Derby winner Kisber was strongly fancied to land his second Classic, although 2000 Guineas winner Petrarch held similar lofty ambitions. At flag fall Constable struggled to hold on to All Heart who set off at a very brisk pace, followed by Julius Caesar and Hellenist. At the Red House Kisber was still pulling double and went on by 3 lengths, while Skylark and Petrarch were mounting their challenges on the outside. Just below the distance it was obvious the favourite was in trouble as Petrarch loomed large, although he only got home by a neck from the strong finishing Wild Tommy in 3 minutes 19.5 seconds.
